SILENCE
“Silence is all we dread.
There’s Ransom in a Voice
But Silence is Infinity.
Himself have not a face.” –Emily Dickinson, “Silence”
As Emily Dickinson expresses in her lines, silence has been an omnipresent phenomenon that speaks, quite ironically, of the unspeakable things. It is such a formidable tool that it has got a foothold in literature as a rhetorical and thematic precedence. Authors implement silence to convey their ideas to disturb fallacies in social, political, and cultural spheres thereby raising a collective consciousness. In this vein, at the conjuncture of voice, speech, and discourse, silence offers stimulating aesthetics and politics. Silence, thus, creates an artistic interaction with power and is able to subvert it. The aim of this symposium is to provide graduate students with an academic space where they can freely discuss their ideas and share their findings in their studies regarding silence.
